My magazine name is really annoying me because I want to create a name that is so interesting and clever and different that it really gets the reader thinking about it. I want it to be mysterious and edgy, something people haven't heard or seen before, but not too complicated that the look of the word puts you off the magazine. I don't want to follow a convention as such, or create something stereotypical and cliche, but I also don't want to push boundaries too far that I lose what I was initially trying to go for. It's just really annoying because I can think of a few decent ideas but nothing that makes me think 'that's the one'. I've been looking at synonyms and looking really far into words, first looking deeper into words to do with rock (guitars, the heavy sound etc) but it all seemed a bit cheesy. So I thought I'd go even further with it and look at the dark themes that surround rock music, words that might relate to the audience, for example ones that have to with being original, different. When I think of the kind of audience I want to read my magazine I want it to be the kids that truly understand music, the ones who are completely devoted to it, who take in every word of every line of every song and appreciate it. The ones who maybe aren't the most confident people, where music is an escape and they keep to themselves. From thinking of my audience like this I got an idea about 'being hidden in the shadows' and so looked deeper into the word 'shadow' finding a word called 'Umbra' which means..
- "The completely dark portion of the shadow cast by the earth, moon, or other body during an eclipse"
- " A dark area, especially the blackest part of a shadow from which all light is cut off"
- "The complete or perfect shadow of an opaque body, as a planet, where the direct light from the source of illumination is completely cut off"
- "A phantom or ghost"
This word just gave me chills as I'd never heard it before. I found it fascinating, so beautiful and it created this still, haunting image to me of exactly the kind of thing I wanted to portray. However although I love the theme behind it, It's just not right for a magazine. It's not quick and sharp enough, it isn't a particularly attractive word to look at and it just doesn't seem perfect to me; which is a shame.
I've had a few more ideas such as..
-RIOT
As it creates as scene, it's short and creates an overall dramatic image to the reader. It's also the name of a Paramore album, and Paramore relate to my genre. But, it is so boring! It follows connotations so well that it would feel as if I had put no effort into it whatsoever.
-VICE
I like this as its, to me, an evil word. It's sinful and it's 'immoral or wicked behaviour'. I feel it exaggerates the rebellious side to rock music and also a band called 'Memphis May Fire' who also relate to the genre, have a song called 'Vices' so to me the word just fits. However there is already a magazine called VICE and I honestly couldn't take the name as I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so. I want something that is completely mine.
-YDG
Initially I was set against using an abbreviation as a name because although in some cases it's clever and works extremely well, if I was to do it I would feel slightly lazy. However 'YDG' is the name of one of my favourite Of Mice And Men songs, and it stands for 'you dig?'. The songs about their fans and how much the band appreciates them and I personally find this a nice topic to focus on; the fans. But then it comes back to the whole fact its an abbreviation, and I know I can think of something with a deeper meaning.
-ALERION
The name 'Alerion' comes from a legendary, mythological bird, that's small and eagle like. I found the word as it is the name of an Asking Alexandria song, and the song shows quite intense anger and emotion, in fact the lyrics are very short..

F*ck this!
Cross my heart, I hope you die
Left by the roadside
Karma's a bitch, right?

I'm not entirely sure how this relates to it's title, but it's clear the theme is deep. But it seems a long (although only 7 letters), complex word that I don't think a reader would take into consideration, in fact it may confuse them.
So overall I'm still stuck, but looking into this is really helping me decide on what kind of themes I want to go into in my magazine, and it's exciting!
I'll figure it out soon, it just needs to come to me!
