HAIR AND MAKEUP TUTORIALS

STYLING IDEAS (CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES)

STYLING IDEAS (HAIR & MAKEUP)

For the styling of my model for the cover photo, I want an extremely dramatic look, even more so than the scene girls I have been looking at, however still following them connotations. I want black to be the most bold colour on her face in terms of makeup, white/pale skin with a pale pink blusher to enhance her cheeks. Thick eyeliner on the bottom of the eye, but not going into the centre as this makes the eye look bigger. Thicker, winged eyeliner on the top eyelid to extend the eye, and then a mixture of black, grey and either pink, purple, or blue (dependent on the colour of the hair) eyeshadows to make the eyes look incredibly dominent and the main feature on the  face. Her eyelashes will be huge (fake) and the bottom will aso be thick, but parted. Eyelashes are important because they are the main part of the eye that can be dramatised. As well as the makeup, I am going to buy bright (purple, pink or blue) contacts for my model to put in and although I could change the eye colour on photoshop, I feel it would be more effective (and more fun) to put contacts in. Lip colours will be quite gothic, dark reds, purples and blacks, to show off the lips and create a sophisticated, scene look. Finally for the makeup, I want to add something to her face to make her that bit more edgier, bring attention to her face, and to do that I am going to add a small amount of face art. These are eyeliner tricks and it creates a more dramatic image.
For hair, the bigger and brighter the better! Ideally I want long straight hair, that is extremely backcombed and teased so it shapes around the head. I would part the hair to the very side of their head so I could create a big 'scene fringe' which is quite a significant detail of a scene girls hair. The hair would either be purple, blue or pink, as I feel these colours relate most to the kind of image I am trying to go for as well as the fact they are the most different and unique colours compared to natural hair colours.

This photo shows the heavy eye makeup, and uses a lot of the same colours I want to with the greys and blacks. This girl is also extremely pale and has very red lips, which relates to the kind of makeup I am thinking about.

This makeup is also beautiful and her hair is amazing, showing the style I would love to create especially with the big fringe. Again she is very pale and has incredibly black eyes and is in fact wearing pink/peach coloured contacts which make her eyes look fantastic.

The eye makeup on this photo is extraordinarily beautiful, as well as the dark lips, pale skin and piercing. Although her hair doesn't follow usually connotations of a scene girl, her makeup does and suits the genre I want to fit the styling in.

This is such a beautiful eye design, and although I would make a few changes in the eyelash length and size of the winged eyeliner, If I made it a little bit more over the top, this is exactly the kind of eye makeup I want.

This is perhaps some of the most beautiful eye makeup I have ever seen, and If I could do something like this on my model It would look unbelievable! I'd change the colour scheme of it to match the hair colour.

I found this fascinating, it's so different and pretty. I love the use of black gems and purple glitter and imagining my model with purple hair and this eye makeup is exciting, it would look brilliant.

These are the coloured contacts I want my model to wear, and it's easy to see by looking at the photos how much of an impact they make on the eye. I'd probably go for a single colour like the first picture because It

would look more to the colour theme, however the second image is just beautiful.

This is the kind of face art I would like to try and do because it gives such an amazing impression and it's so dramatic. It looks very haunting  mysterious and I would definitely use black to do it because of how effective it is.

MAGAZINE NAME UPDATE

My magazine name is really annoying me because I want to create a name that is so interesting and clever and different that it really gets the reader thinking about it. I want it to be mysterious and edgy, something people haven't heard or seen before, but not too complicated that the look of the word puts you off the magazine. I don't want to follow a convention as such, or create something stereotypical and cliche, but I also don't want to push boundaries too far that I lose what I was initially trying to go for. It's just really annoying because I can think of a few decent ideas but nothing that makes me think 'that's the one'. I've been looking at synonyms and looking really far into words, first looking deeper into words to do with rock (guitars, the heavy sound etc) but it all seemed a bit cheesy. So I thought I'd go even further with it and look at the dark themes that surround rock music, words that might relate to the audience, for example ones that have to with being original, different. When I think of the kind of audience I want to read my magazine I want it to be the kids that truly understand music, the ones who are completely devoted to it, who take in every word of every line of every song and appreciate it. The ones who maybe aren't the most confident people, where music is an escape and they keep to themselves. From thinking of my audience like this I got an idea about 'being hidden in the shadows' and so looked deeper into the word 'shadow' finding a word called 'Umbra' which means..

- "The completely dark portion of the shadow cast by the earth, moon, or other body during an eclipse"
- " A dark area, especially the blackest part of a shadow from which all light is cut off"
- "The complete or perfect shadow of an opaque body, as a planet, where the direct light from the source of illumination is completely cut off"
- "A phantom or ghost"

This word just gave me chills as I'd never heard it before. I found it fascinating, so beautiful and it created this still, haunting image to me of exactly the kind of thing I wanted to portray. However although I love the theme behind it, It's just not right for a magazine. It's not quick and sharp enough, it isn't a particularly attractive word to look at and it just doesn't seem perfect to me; which is a shame.

I've had a few more ideas such as..

-RIOT
As it creates as scene, it's short and creates an overall dramatic image to the reader. It's also the name of a Paramore album, and Paramore relate to my genre. But, it is so boring! It follows connotations so well that it would feel as if I had put no effort into it whatsoever.
-VICE
I like this as its, to me, an evil word. It's sinful and it's 'immoral or wicked behaviour'. I feel it exaggerates the rebellious side to rock music and also a band called 'Memphis May Fire' who also relate to the genre, have a song called 'Vices' so to me the word just fits. However there is already a magazine called VICE and I honestly couldn't take the name as I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so. I want something that is completely mine.
-YDG
Initially I was set against using an abbreviation as a name because although in some cases it's clever and works extremely well, if I was to do it I would feel slightly lazy. However 'YDG' is the name of one of my favourite Of Mice And Men songs, and it stands for 'you dig?'. The songs about their fans and how much the band appreciates them and I personally find this a nice topic to focus on; the fans. But then it comes back to the whole fact its an abbreviation, and I know I can think of something with a deeper meaning.
-ALERION
The name 'Alerion' comes from a legendary, mythological bird, that's small and eagle like. I found the word as it is the name of an Asking Alexandria song, and the song shows quite intense anger and emotion, in fact the lyrics are very short..
------------------------------------------------------------------
F*ck this!

Cross my heart, I hope you die
Left by the roadside

Karma's a bitch, right?

Cross my heart, I hope you die
Left by the roadside

Karma's a bitch, right?

-------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not entirely sure how this relates to it's title, but it's clear the theme is deep. But it seems a long (although only 7 letters), complex word that I don't think a reader would take into consideration, in fact it may confuse them.

So overall I'm still stuck, but looking into this is really helping me decide on what kind of themes I want to go into in my magazine, and it's exciting!

I'll figure it out soon, it just needs to come to me!

LYRICAL THEMES PORTRAYED IN ROCK MUSIC

I feel that the lyrics in music represent the genre more than the styling, the image or the way the genre is perceived. The main lyrical themes that run through the songs the genre presents are the true themes of the genre as they are what it is based upon! The themes that are presented in rock music can usually be split into two categories.

Category 1

-Loss
-Love
-Lust
-Depression
-Suicide
-Death
-Heartbreak
-Inflicting pain on others or ones self

This is the darker side to rock music, the side that stereotypes 'emos' and brings the negative, saddening side of rock. Although the themes aren't uplifting, they are incredibly beautiful, focusing on things a lot of others genres don't dare to. The bands and artists that focus on this side of rock music usually have the image to go with it, the 'black hair, black eyes, white face' kind of styling. The lyrics that are brought from themes as deep as these are heart wrenching, showing such intense and pure emotion that a lot of people can relate too.

"We all carry these things inside that no one else can see. They hold us like anchors. They drown us out at sea"  - 'Chelsea Smile' Bring Me The Horizon

"I may look happy, but honestly dear, the only way I'll smile is if you cut me ear to ear" - 'Chelsea Smile' Bring Me The Horizon

"If I had it my way I'd slit your throat with the knife you left in my back" - 'Sleep With One Eye Open' Bring Me The Horizon

"How stubborn are the scars when they wont fade away?" - 'A Phophecy' Asking Alexandria

"Excuses are useless when your mouth is stapled shut" - 'Nobody Don't Dance No More' Asking Alexandria

"Pretty little lady with the swollen eyes would you show them to me?" - When You Can't Sleep At Night' Of Mice And Men

"I was all for you, you fell over my love, now I'm left with thoughts of suicide" - 'Let Live' Of Mice And Men

"I kissed the scars on her skin, I still think you're beautiful and I don't ever want to lose my best friend" - 'A Match Into Water' Pierce The Veil

"What if I can't forget you? I'll burn your name into my throat, I'll be the fire that will catch you.. Whats so good about picking up the pieces?" - 'Caraphernelia' Pierce The Veil

"Oh what a waste of a perfectly good, clean wrist" - 'Disasterology' Pierce The Veil

"Dare me to jump off this Jersey bridge?" - 'King For A Day' Pierce The Veil

"Red for the cancer, red for the wealthy, red for the drink that's mixed with suicide" - 'King For A Day' Pierce The Veil

"Cos you re such a pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty face, but you turned into a pretty big waste of my time" - 'If You Can't Hang' Sleeping With Sirens

"They said it gets easier but they lied" - 'Miles Away' Memphis May Fire

"One day I'll heal but I'll be covered in scars" - 'Red In Tooth And Claw' Memphis May Fire

"Have you ever took a blade to your wrists? Have you been skipping meals?" - 'Hospital For Souls' Bring Me The Horizon

"I've said it once, I've said it twice, I've said it a thousand f*cking times, that I'm OK, that I'm fine, that its all just in my mind, but this has got the best of me and I just can't seem to sleep" - 'It Never Ends' Bring Me The Horizon

Category 2

-Partying
-Alcohol
-Drugs
-Sex
-Being in love
-Having fun

This is the brighter side to rock, the side that focuses on the good things in life and usually pushes the boundaries while doing so. Its when the relationships going good, when they're so drunk you don't even know where you are and when that girl they've wanted for ages, finally agrees to go to bed. Its the positives, and the sound is unreal, the instrumentation sounding unbelievably uplifting and loud.

"Oh resistance is useless, just two kids stupid and fearless" - 'Time Bomb' All Time Low

"Maybe it's not my weekend, but it's gonna be my year!" - 'Weightless' All Time Low

"You're only happy when I'm wasted, I point my finger but I just can't place it, feels like I'm falling in love when I'm falling to the bathroom floor.. I remember how you tasted, I've had you so many times lets face it" - 'Stella' All Time Low

"2am, I'm on the blackout binge again, you know I don't need sleep and I've lost my keys but I've got so many friends" - 'Stella' All Time Low

"You were fake, I was great; nothing personal" - 'Break Your Little Heart' All Time Low

"Party queen, cause a scene, so ridiculous; little dress, maybe less, so conspicuous.." - 'Break Your Little Heart' All Time Low

"Everybody knows there's a party at the end of the world" - 'Hello Brooklyn' All Time Low

"Tattoos and a switchblade attitude, snakebite heart with a bubblegum smile, sex in stereo, don't turn the radio down" - 'Lost In Stereo' All Time Low

"Somethings telling me to leave but I wont cos I'm damned if I do ya, damned if I don't!" - 'Damned if I do ya' All Time Low

"You say you're winning cos you're laughing, while I'm crying crocodile tears" - 'The Irony Of Choking On A Lifesaver' All Time Low

"Don't hold your breath I am not losing sleep over you, I'm Mr Reckless with a capital R!" - 'Reckless' You Me At Six

"You're pretty from afar but far from pretty" - 'Takes One To Know One' You Me At Six

"Well I'm your friend, friend with benefits" - 'Loverboy' You Me At Six

"You're not on my list of things to do, cos I've already done you" - 'Playing The Blame Game' You Me At Six

"If one drink can make tonight slip your mind then you should drink up so you can convince yourself that I'm cute" - 'Liquid Confidence' You Me At Six

I think looking at the lyrical themes that are portrayed give a much deeper insight into what kind of themes I should present when looking at my music magazine.

MEDIA PACK

To make my media pack I researched 'Kerrang' magazine, looking at the average age, gender percentage ratio, circulation, readership and abc1 profile. This helped me decide on what my magazines statustics would be. I also researched the type of rock fans I would want to read my magazine, helping me decide on my audience. I realised a younger, more female dominated audience would be better because it's different.
